When you have a nanny or other domestic staff in your home you are required by law to employ them just like you would any employee in a business. 


This means creating a nanny payroll, providing them with payslips, ensuring they are registered with HMRC as an employee and paying their tax and National Insurance as well as you, as their employer are paying your employers NI.


This may sound like something you can do yourself, but in reality, it is more complex than you’d think and the penalties for getting it wrong can be high!

Liaison with HMRC on your behalf

We will be your representative with HMRC in everything related to your nanny or staff member. We will:


  • Register you as an employer
  • Report returns to HMRC on a monthly basis
  • Receive tax code changes and implement them in a timely manner
  • Send your nanny’s P60 each year and produce P45s when necessary
  • Managing any statutory payment calculations including SMP, SSP etc

Calculating weekly or monthly pay

We always advise our clients to agree on a gross salary with their employees. 


Feather Payroll Solutions will accurately calculate your employees’ pay on a weekly or monthly basis and make sure it takes into account any changes in tax code or statutory payments.

Creating payslips for you and your employees

We work with the most up to date technology to deliver payslips to you and your employees. 


Your employee will receive their payslip and you will get an employer copy to indicate how much you need to pay your employee and HMRC liabilities. 

Assessing employees for workplace pension auto enrolment

By law, all eligible employees must be enrolled in to a workplace pension, unless they choose to opt out. Feather's outsourced payroll solution will assess each employee’s eligibility and enrol them into the Government’s NEST pension scheme. Pension payments will be indicated on their payslip.

Calculating statutory payments

Should your employees require it, you are required to make the following statutory payments through your payroll:


  • Sick pay
  • Maternity pay
  • Paternity pay
  • Parental bereavement pay
  • Adoption pay


Whilst you make these payments to your employees, some you can reclaim back the amount paid from HMRC. Amounts for each vary and our outsourced payroll team will ensure you and your employee receive the correct amount depending on their unique situation.

Filing your returns with HMRC

HMRC require RTI (Real Time Information) reporting whenever you run payroll for your employees. Our IT systems automatically file your returns and keep your HMRC account up to date and accurate. We also deal with HMRC on any queries that result from reporting 

Provide P60s and P45s

As part of our outsourced payroll service, on an annual basis, we will provide your employees with their P60 which gives an overview of their PAYE for the financial year. In the event that an employee leaves we will create a P45 for them to pass to their new employer.

Ongoing employment advice

Feather Payroll does not offer legal advice, but our expert team are able to advise on matters relating to pay, for example calculating redundancy payments, notice periods and anything statutory.
